Izmir-Ephesus Tour

The ancient city of Ephesus in modern-day Turkiye is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and at its peak was known as the trade and science centre of its time. We think a visit to Ephesus is a destination that should be on everyone’s bucket list and is a must-see for history enthusiasts and travellers who love visiting Turkiye alike.

Arguably, the most important city of the Ancient World, Ephesus was continuously inhabited for several millennia. Its exact founding date is uncertain, but evidence suggests it was settled as early as the Neolithic period, around 6,000 BCE. However, it became a prominent city during the Classical Greek period, particularly during the 6th century BCE.

But it was during the Roman Empire that Ephesus reached its peak, becoming one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean region. It served as the capital of the Roman province of Asia (covering most of Western Anatolia) during this time. The city was home to various peoples over the centuries, including Greeks, Romans, and later Byzantines.

Ephesus was also an important centre for early Christianity. It is mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible, particularly in the letters of Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. The city declined over time due to factors such as changes in trade routes, natural disasters, and invasions. By the 15th century CE, Ephesus was largely abandoned.

Overall, Ephesus was inhabited for over 8,000 years, from its earliest settlements in the Neolithic period until its abandonment in the late Middle Ages.

What can you expect to see when you visit Ephesus?

When you visit the ancient city of Ephesus, you will see some incredibly well-preserved archaeological ruins and historical sites that offer some extraordinary insights into the city's rich past. These include:

1. The Theatre of Ephesus: One of the largest ancient theatres in the world, the Theatre of Ephesus could accommodate up to 25,000 spectators. Visitors can explore the grand amphitheatre, which in its heyday was used for theatrical performances, gladiatorial contests, and public assemblies.

2. The Library of Celsus: This iconic structure is one of the most impressive buildings in Ephesus. Built in honour of the Roman senator Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, the library housed thousands of scrolls and served as a monumental tomb for Celsus.

3. The Temple of Artemis: Although only a few columns remain standing today, the Temple of Artemis was once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis, the temple was a major pilgrimage site and a centre of worship.

4. The Agora of Ephesus: The agora, or marketplace, was once the beating heart of Ephesus, as it was where commerce, politics, and social life converged. You can explore the ruins of the agora, including shops, temples, and government buildings.

5. The Terrace Houses: The Terrace Houses, also known as the "houses of the rich," are a series of well-preserved residential buildings that provide you with a glimpse into the daily lives of Ephesian elites. Intricate frescoes, mosaics, and architectural details offer insight into ancient Roman domestic architecture and decoration.

6. The Temple of Hadrian: Built in the 2nd century CE, the Temple of Hadrian is a well-preserved monument dedicated to the Roman Emperor Hadrian. You will see its façade, adorned with elaborate reliefs depicting scenes from Greek mythology and the imperial propaganda of its day.

7. The Great Theatre Gymnasium: This monumental structure served as a centre for sports, education, and social gatherings in ancient Ephesus. Here, you can explore the remains of the gymnasium, including its colonnaded courtyard, baths, and exercise halls.

8. The Church of Mary: Thought to be one of the earliest Christian churches, the Church of Mary is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and dates back to the 1st century CE. You will see the remains of the church, including its mosaic floor and marble columns.
